pain in the butt

Sometimes it really stinks having a hubby that's in a wheelchair. Today/this week, especially, has been difficult. The part that stinks is just seeing him struggle with his own body. For awhile in the fall he had a terrible time walking without falling. Although he normally isn't the best walker, he can usually walk up and down the stairs and around the house (even though he's slow and sometimes balance-less). Right after we came back from our honeymoon he would fall up to five times a day. (He improved by winter.) It was so hard to watch him struggle with something his body should be able to do. There wasn't much I could do other than try and lighten the mood or try to empathize.

Recently, he's had some other problems that are just really a pain in the butt...excuse my pun. The way hubby feels pain below his chest is a lot different than the way people normally feel pain. (Like he can't really differentiate between hot and cold or a stomach ache from being hungry.) Currently, his butt-bone (sit bones) have been very tender and painful. He is in a lot of pain when he sits, but he doesn't have the slightest idea what it could be from or even what kind of pain it is. Via the process of elimination, we think he has bruised sit-bones. He has been falling more lately (kind of like the problem he had in the fall, but not as bad), and there have definitely been some bad falls where he's landed directly onto his bottom. I'm hoping it's a bone bruise and sitting on a donut will help!

Please send your prayers/good vibes/hopeful thoughts Scotty's way! =]

Super yummy snack-pizza!

First, I have to say that even though I got married without knowing how to cook a lick, I am starting to learn and love it! I love putting different ingredients together to make a delicious (nutritious) dinner for my hubby! Thankfully, Scotty is an awesome cook and has been able to show me the ropes. I love his cooking, but I love cooking more and more meals each week. Do any of you cook or are learning to cook?

Today I want to share my super easy, super yummy pizza snack. All you will need is:
*2 soft flour tortillas
some spaghetti sauce (I just use whatever is in my fridge)
some grated cheese

I start by preheating my oven to 350. On a cookie sheet, I put down the first tortilla. I spoon on some cold sauce and spread it around the tortilla. Next, sprinkle however much cheese you like. Pop the other tortilla on top of it (the top tortilla is what makes the pizza easy to snack on/travel with and not so messy), and put in the oven. Bake for about 10 minutes or until the edges of the tortillas get golden. Take it out and cut with a pizza cutter. It's a fun yummy snack that isn't messy or too doughy. I even put mine in a tupperware to bring to work sometimes if I'm really in a rush.

I hope you like this recipe and please leave a comment to let me know what your go-to snacks are! =]

*I love buying generic, but I never skimp on tortillas. The generic version is usually super dried out compared to my fav brand, Mission.

This is what the pizza looks like! (Scotty likes to add in pepperonis, but I hate adding in processed meat!)

Family lovin'

This weekend I got to spend some time with some super awesome and near and dear to my heart. Her name is Emily, and I'm blessed that she is my cousin (in law-but that doesn't really count). I met her shortly after getting engaged to Scotty. There are some people you just click with instantly; you just have chemistry with certain people. Emily and I have that chemistry and just clicked right off the bat. I'm so blessed to have her in my life as a cousin but more importantly as a best friend. Do any of you guys have someone like that in your life? Someone with whom you clicked instantly or even family that turned into a great friend? If you do please comment and tell me about them =]

This weekend she visited 'home' from her apartment in State College. She has so many friends and loves all of her family, so I'm always happy that she makes time to see Scotty and me every time she's home. This weekend I got to see her almost all weekend-it was AWESOME. Friday she slept over and we just kind of had girl talk and watched movies while Scotty did his own hobbies. We made awesome spritz cookies (pink for the upcoming Vday!!!) and just enjoyed our time together. Saturday we went to a consignment shop after a yummy pancake breakfast. Saturday day I got to bum around all day with the hubby until Saturday night when the three of us all got ice cream at Dairy Queen (such an indulgence).

This morning Scotty and I got to eat breakfast with my mom, and now I'm getting ready to do my Sunday shift at work (woohoo), but reflecting on this weekend of family just makes me so happy! The only thing that could have made it better would have been if my dad could have made breakfast this morning, too, and if Caroline (my other cousin, who rounds out Emily and me) could have hung out with us on Friday!

Later I'll post about my new love of food and how I love working with my best friend, Dana.

top of my wishlist

Lately, I have been drooling over a whole new type of item. Usually I lust for dresses, shoes, or swimwear, but my newest obsession is the Canon EOS Rebel T3 (see below for the list of things I'm obsessed with). I'm ridiculously pining for this DSLR, and I should be able to indulge by the summer (hopefully).

I really want to leave the world of iffy point and shoot photography. My current camera is awesome with video, but its photography is kind of a hit-or miss when it comes to being in focus or not. I hate having to take a picture multiple times to avoid the blurry-picture conundrum. Even my dad, who is a photographer, has difficulty with my blurry-photo camera.

What about you guys? Do you have an item on your wishlist that is absolutely eclipsing everything else? Or are any of you photography lovers who have any preference of cameras?

ps, tomorrow I'll be posting about my weekend with my amazing cousin, Emily, and how I'm starting to LOVE cooking for me and the hubby.

Stay tuned,
Mrs. E =]

Decisions and Dreams

On Decisions...
I finally decided to make a blog. It's something I've wanted for awhile, so I thought I'd give it a try. If I really hate it in a month I'll shut it down, but I doubt that will happen. I've been reading a lot of really awesome blogs recently, and I was just so envious about their ability to document all the cool/momentous/sad/mundane parts of their lives in a way that relates to other people, so I had to give it a go.
The reason I named it "Mrs. Southern At Heart": it's true. I feel like I am completely not a 'Northerner' and I somehow was born Southern even though I am from the North and was raised by Northern parents. Granted some of it is generalization, but I seem to associate to the young wives who love to cook and bake and entertain people, nothing like my own mother. I just identify much more with all of those awesome Southern bloggers out there!

Onto Dreams...
I had two dreams last night that I was pregnant. It was so real. I was so sad when I woke up. Alas, my hubby and I are not pregnant. We are trying to wait at least two more months before we start trying, and the wait is killing me. I've dreamed about being pregnant for almost a year now, and each day is such a disappointment knowing I don't have a little peanut in me. Last night, I dreamed I was given a dSLR camera that I've been coveting forever, and was disappointed in the morning as well! Dreams have a way of dampening real-life sometimes, but I just have to be patient.
